Lucara Diamond, a prominent figure in the diamond industry, has once again showcased its mining prowess with a striking discovery at the Karowe diamond mine in Botswana. The newly unearthed diamond, an astounding gem weighing 692.3 carats, boasts dimensions of 46.5 by 40.7 by 28.4 millimeters. This remarkable Type IIa high white gem was extracted from the South Lobe sector of the mine.
This exceptional find swiftly follows another significant discovery earlier in the same month—a Type IIa white top gem of an astonishing 1,080 carats. These remarkable revelations underscore Lucara’s adeptness in diamond recovery and highlight the substantial potential inherent in the Karowe mine.
William Lamb, the CEO of Lucara, conveyed his enthusiasm through a news release, articulating that this specific find marks the 20th instance of a diamond exceeding 100 carats recovered at the Karowe mine in 2023. Lamb further emphasized the significance of unearthing sizable diamonds from the EM/PK(S) lithology located within the South Lobe. This accomplishment serves to bolster their confidence in the forthcoming underground project. The project’s vision entails a substantial portion of mined material originating from this specific phase of kimberlite during the initial stages of underground production.
