Amazon’s Antwerp Diamond Heist Series to Debut in October

Everybody Loves Diamonds is an eight-part drama that details the execution of one of the biggest thefts in history.

New York – The diamond industry will be in the spotlight on Amazon this autumn, this time in a made-in-Italy drama series inspired by the largest diamond theft of all time, the Antwerp Diamond Heist.

One of the biggest heists in history, the caper took place on February 15, 2003, when a team of Italian thieves led by Leonardo Notarbartolo broke into the underground vault of the Antwerp Diamond Centre and looted it.

The thieves made off with more than $100 million in diamonds, cash and jewellery.

The new show about the heist, called ‘Everybody Loves Diamonds’, follows Notarbartolo (played by Italian actor Kim Rossi Stuart) and his team of thieves.

Over the course of eight episodes, the limited series will detail the meticulous planning that went into the heist, as well as the execution, which included successfully circumventing some of the tightest security in the world.

When announcing the series’ production in 2020, Amazon described it as a “heist series with comedy implications”.

Everybody Loves Diamonds also stars Anna Foglietta, Gian Marco Tognazzi, Carlotta Antonelli and Leonardo Lidi, with British actors Rupert Everett (Julia Roberts’ editor and boyfriend in “My Best Friend’s Wedding”) and Malcolm McDowell (“A Clockwork Orange”).

It is directed by Gianluca Maria Tavarelli and produced by Wildside, part of Fremantle, which produces shows such as My Brilliant Friend, Deadliest Catch and The X Factor.

It will be available on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories from 13 October.

Everybody Loves Diamonds is not the first time the story of the Antwerp diamond heist has been told.

It’s been told on The History Channel, including as the first episode of the first season of History’s Greatest Heists, narrated by Pierce Brosnan.

Once upon a time, J.J. Abrams was said to be producing a film about the infamous theft, but it never materialised.

There’s also a book about it, Flawless: Inside the Largest Diamond Heist in History” by Scott Andrew Selby and Greg Campbell, and it was featured in the first episode of the Audible podcast “Heist With Michael Caine”.
