The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will launch its redesigned Graduate Jeweler Diploma Program in 2024. This program represents a significant leap forward in jewellery manufacturing education.
combining a foundational technical knowledge of bench jewellery with a focus on creative expression and the application of these skills in the industry.
The meticulously crafted GIA Graduate Jeweler Diploma programme draws on proven techniques used in both fine jewellery making and retail jewellery repair. This comprehensive, project-based course equips students with the skills necessary to succeed in today’s dynamic jewellery market. Many of the projects students create in class will help them build an impressive portfolio to showcase their skills and creativity to potential employers and clients as they begin their careers.
“Our goal is to provide students with proficiency in safe practices and jewellery manufacturing techniques that exceed industry standards by raising the bar,” said Duncan Pay, GIA Senior Vice President of Education and Chief Academic Officer. “Leveraging decades of experience in teaching the art of jewellery making, coupled with the expertise of master goldsmith and award-winning jewellery designer Alan Revere, we’ve developed a program that not only hones classic technical skills, but also integrates state-of-the-art tools and equipment into our state-of-the-art classrooms.”
This 28-week programme focuses on traditional jewellery making, recognised as the cornerstone of all jewellery making. Essential skills that students learn include sawing, piercing, measuring, layout, filing, forging, bending, twisting and advanced torch techniques with an emphasis on soldering, annealing and brazing. The programme also includes extensive gemstone setting training and modules on casting, wax carving, laser welding, metallurgy and hand engraving.
Programme dates are 22 January – 1 August 2024; 13 May – 21 November 2024; and 9 September 2024 – 7 April 2025.
