Ottawa police have taken significant steps in addressing a spate of jewelry store thefts and robberies over the past year, announcing charges against two individuals believed to be responsible for seven incidents.
Following a thorough four-month investigation, authorities executed warrants at two residences on April 12, resulting in the arrest of the two suspects.
Among the notable incidents was a bold daytime smash-and-grab at Doucet Jewelry Store in Place D’Orleans Mall on April 8, which was captured on surveillance footage. During this incident, the suspects brazenly entered the store and proceeded to smash display cases, allegedly making off with a substantial amount of gold and diamonds.
The individuals in custody have been linked to six additional jewelry store robberies, including incidents on Dec. 29, 2023, Jan. 2, 2024, Jan. 5, 2024, Feb. 22, 2024, Feb. 24, 2024, and April 6, 2024, occurring across various locations in Ottawa.
A 23-year-old man and a 16-year-old, both residents of Ottawa, have been apprehended in connection with these crimes.
The 23-year-old suspect faces multiple charges, including theft over $5000, possessing a masked/disguised face, attempted robbery, possessing dangerous weapons, mischief over $5000, conspiracy to commit indictable offenses, and robbery.
The 16-year-old has been charged in relation to the two most recent incidents on April 6 and April 8.
Both individuals are currently in custody awaiting further legal proceedings.
