A 13-year-old girl in Hong Kong has been deceived into handing over gold and diamond jewelry valued at HK$300,000 (US$38,470) to scammers who falsely promised to duplicate the items and provide her with rewards.
On Friday evening, police arrested an 18-year-old woman in Tsing Yi, who was allegedly involved in the scam. The arrest followed a transaction that took place two days earlier. Authorities revealed that the arrested woman had previously fallen victim to a similar scam. She has been released on bail and is scheduled to report back to the police next month.
The girl had been lured online by fraudsters who claimed they could replicate her gold and diamond necklaces. Between August 28 and September 5, she handed over the jewelry in four separate batches. The scammers assured her that the original pieces would be returned and promised additional rewards, which never materialized.
When the girl’s family realized the jewelry was missing, they suspected fraud and reported the incident to the police. Detectives from the Kwai Tsing district crime squad are actively investigating the case.
The police noted that fraud syndicates often exploit young people’s desire for quick financial gain to perpetrate scams. They warned that individuals found guilty of obtaining property through deception could face a maximum prison sentence of 10 years.
