A stunning pair of ruby and diamond ear clips is expected to sell for between $1.2 million and $1.6 million (HK$9.4 million to HK$12.5 million) at Phillips’ highly anticipated Hong Kong Jewels Auction next month. The auction, set for October 3, will showcase a range of exceptional Burmese ruby lots, highlighting the enduring allure of rare gemstones in the global market.
The star lot, these remarkable ear clips, features two rubies weighing 10.77 and 9.99 carats respectively, both free from indications of heating. Surrounded by brilliant-cut diamonds and mounted in platinum and yellow gold, these pieces exemplify the craftsmanship and rarity that have long made Burmese rubies some of the most coveted gems in the world.
Among other notable items to be auctioned is an exquisite ruby and diamond necklace. This piece boasts 54.18 carats of graduated cushion-shaped, oval, and circular-cut rubies, many of which are a prized pigeon blood red, spaced by white pear-shaped diamonds. The necklace is estimated to fetch between $1 million and $1.15 million (HK$7.8 million to HK$9 million).
Janet Lam, senior specialist at Phillips, emphasized the growing interest in high-value jewelry, stating, “The global jewelry demand has remained resilient, especially for high jewelry, and we have seen steady and positive growth this year at Phillips.” The auction house has experienced a surge in sales, with over a 190% increase in global jewelry auction sales in the first half of 2024 compared to 2023.
Phillips’ Hong Kong Jewels Auction is set to attract significant attention from collectors and investors worldwide, with its impressive selection of rare Burmese rubies. With demand for high jewelry showing no signs of slowing down, the auction is poised to deliver exceptional results, reflecting the enduring value and desirability of fine gemstones.
