A stunning 18th century necklace, crafted from approximately 500 diamonds sourced from the famed Golconda mines in India, is scheduled for auction in Geneva this November. Sotheby’s announced that the piece, which has remained largely hidden from public view for decades, will go on sale on November 11, with online bidding commencing on October 25. It is anticipated to fetch between $1.8 million and $2.8 million (approximately Rs 15 crore to Rs 23 crore).
This captivating necklace is not only an artistic marvel but also a relic of significant historical importance. Members of an aristocratic family are believed to have worn the jewel during pivotal royal ceremonies, including the coronations of King George VI in 1937 and Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Sotheby’s has revealed that some diamonds in the necklace may be linked to the infamous “Affair of the Necklace,” a scandal that played a critical role in the downfall of Marie Antoinette and contributed to the French Revolution.
Andres White Correal, chairman of Sotheby’s jewelry department, expressed excitement over the discovery, stating, “It’s a wonderful find because, normally, jewelry from the 18th century was broken up for repurposing. To have an intact piece of such importance from the Georgian period is absolutely fabulous.” The necklace is said to have been part of the collection of the Marquesses of Anglesey in the early 20th century, showcasing its illustrious lineage.
While the exact designer and commissioning details of the necklace remain elusive, Sotheby’s suggests that its grandeur indicates it was likely created for royalty. The necklace is believed to have been crafted in the decade preceding the French Revolution, heightening its historical intrigue.
Sotheby’s further highlighted that the diamonds are likely sourced from the legendary Golconda mines, renowned for producing some of the purest and most dazzling diamonds in history. The necklace will be on public display in London until Wednesday, before embarking on a global tour that includes stops in Hong Kong, New York, and Taiwan.
