End Of An Era: Cortes Jewelers Closes Its Doors After 40+ Years In Macon

After over four decades of serving the Macon community, Cortes Jewelers is officially closing its doors, leaving behind a legacy built on trust, craftsmanship, and timeless elegance. Founded by Richard Cortes, the family-owned business has been a cornerstone in the town, known for its custom jewelry designs, rare estate pieces, and unparalleled customer service.

Richard Cortes, who spent more than 50 years in the jewelry business, announced that he is retiring, and the store will close for good after a bittersweet decision to step away. “It’s a mix of emotions,” Cortes says. “After all these years, I’m ready to enjoy my retirement, but it’s hard to say goodbye to a place that’s meant so much to me and my family.” Cortes added that a going-out-of-business sale has begun and will continue until January, though the exact closing date is still to be determined.

Cortes, a Macon native, first discovered his passion for jewelry while working at a local jewelry store during high school. His journey took him from Georgia to Texas and California, where he studied gemology and jewelry making. In the 1970s, he opened his first jewelry store in Los Angeles with a business partner, but after their partnership ended, Cortes returned to Macon and established Cortes Jewelers. Over the years, the store became a trusted name, offering everything from engagement rings to custom-designed heirlooms.

A community institution, Cortes Jewelers became more than just a store—it was a place where memories were made. From helping young couples select engagement rings to designing family heirlooms, Cortes cherished the relationships he built with customers. “Being a part of those life-changing moments, from weddings to anniversaries, was one of the most rewarding parts of my job,” he said. “It’s a privilege to have been part of so many families’ milestones.”

The store’s final days have been emotional for many long-time customers, with some returning in tears to express their gratitude for the jewelry pieces they still wear daily. As the sale continues, Cortes is focused on ensuring a smooth transition, sharing his deep appreciation for the community’s unwavering support over the years. “I’d love to sit down and thank every person who trusted us with their jewelry needs,” he added.

While Cortes Jewelers may be closing its doors, the legacy of the Cortes family will live on. Richard’s son, Justin, who worked alongside his father for years, is taking the next step in the family business. Justin plans to acquire the remaining assets of Cortes Jewelers and open a new jewelry store, continuing the family’s dedication to craftsmanship and service. “I’m extremely proud of my son,” said Richard. “He’s got the skills, the passion, and the drive to carry on the tradition.”

As Cortes Jewelers bids farewell to its loyal customers, Richard Cortes leaves behind a lasting impact on the Macon community. The store’s closing marks the end of an era, but the Cortes family’s story in the jewelry business is far from over.
