Lab-Grown Diamonds Shine In Korea’S Evolving Jewelry Market

A growing trend in Korea’s jewelry scene is catching the eye of savvy consumers: lab-grown diamonds. These ethically sourced, eco-friendly gems are gaining popularity among Korean shoppers for their impressive quality and significantly lower prices compared to natural diamonds. With advancements in technology, lab-grown diamonds are not only more affordable but are also beginning to redefine the landscape of the local jewelry market.

A recent encounter with lab-grown diamonds by Seoul resident Seo, 42, highlights the shifting attitude toward these diamonds. Seo, who initially planned to purchase natural diamond jewelry, was introduced to lab-grown diamonds at a local shop. To her surprise, the quality of the diamonds was indistinguishable from natural ones, and the price was much more accessible. I bought a pair of earrings and a bracelet with lab-grown diamonds, and the cost was much lower than I had expected,” said Seo. “I’m delighted with the variety of designs available and have already recommended lab-grown diamonds to my friends.”

Korea’s attraction to diamonds remains strong, with the gemstone topping the list of preferred precious stones. According to a July survey by Gallup Korea, 59 percent of respondents selected diamonds as their favorite gemstone, followed by emeralds (9 percent) and sapphires (7 percent). This enduring love for diamonds, combined with the affordability of lab-grown alternatives, is boosting demand in the region.

Lab-grown diamonds are created by mimicking the natural process of diamond formation—subjecting carbon to intense pressure and heat. While they share the same chemical composition and physical properties as mined diamonds, lab-grown diamonds are typically a fraction of the cost, sometimes priced as low as one-tenth that of natural diamonds.

The innovative design possibilities afforded by lab-grown diamonds are also gaining attention. Han Gi-pyeong, CEO of Leehan Diamond, a diamond wholesaler, highlights how these diamonds allow jewelry designers to experiment with new and bolder creations. “Lab-grown diamonds are opening doors for more diverse designs, such as five-carat oval-cut diamonds, which would be prohibitively expensive with natural diamonds,” said Han. “This will lead to more unique, intricate, and sophisticated diamond jewelry pieces.”

As lab-grown diamonds continue to capture the imagination of Korean consumers and designers, they are set to redefine the traditional diamond market. Whether it’s for engagement rings, earrings, or bracelets, these gems offer luxury at an affordable price, bringing the sparkle of diamonds to a wider audience.
