A New Era Of Fine Jewelry: Shola Branson Unveils Fragments At Sotheby’S Paris

Amongst the illustrious Cartier diamonds and striking mid-century Jean Després bracelets, a new contemporary vision takes center stage at Sotheby’s Paris. Jewelry designer Shola Branson unveils his debut solo collection, Fragments, a sophisticated fusion of innovation, sustainability, and refined craftsmanship.

Running until April 12, this highly anticipated showcase highlights Branson’s signature aesthetic, defined by sleek geometry and a futuristic sensibility, all crafted using Single Mine Origin (SMO) gold, ethically sourced Colombian emeralds, and Botswanamark diamonds.

While this is not Branson’s first collaboration with Sotheby’s—having previously been featured in the Brilliant & Black exhibitions in New York and London—this Parisian showcase marks a defining moment in his journey.

“As my work matures and I continue to shape my place in the industry, presenting at Sotheby’s Paris feels like a significant milestone,” Branson reflects. “Paris is synonymous with luxury and a gateway to a global network of collectors.”

The Fragments collection, though adorned with striking gemstones, embodies a minimalist ethos. Branson’s influences—spanning science fiction, architecture, ancient artifacts, and contemporary sculpture—coalesce into sleek, cartouche-shaped pieces where diamonds gleam against blackened gold, reminiscent of meteorite surfaces.

The soft luster of brushed SMO gold not only enhances the futuristic feel of the collection but underscores Branson’s commitment to responsible sourcing.

SMO gold is an industry-leading ethical material, offering full traceability to mines that uphold the highest environmental and labor standards.

Established in 2017 by Charlie and Dan Betts, SMO gold is sourced from three responsible mines across Africa—Yanfolila in Mali, Ity in Côte d’Ivoire, and Sabodala-Massawa in Senegal—before being refined in Switzerland.

Its commitment to sustainability comes at a premium, with a 2-3% higher cost than non-traceable gold, but its impact on the fine jewelry industry is profound.

After establishing a solid presence in the UK and Europe, SMO gold is now making inroads into the U.S. market, with Rhode Island-based C&J Fine Jewelry Makers as its exclusive North American distributor. As consumer demand for traceable luxury increases, the adoption of SMO gold may soon become a defining industry standard.
