Authorities in Brazil have executed search warrants at the residences of two former aides to the ex-president, responding to accusations that they illicitly traded high-value jewelry presents from foreign governments in exchange for monetary gains.
Reportedly, the proceeds from these transactions were purportedly funneled to Jair Bolsonaro, who suffered defeat in last year’s October election to his left-wing adversary, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The Federal Police have asserted that a lawyer and a former aide are under suspicion for allegedly exploiting governmental resources to divert high-value assets bestowed by international authorities to Brazilian representatives during official diplomatic visits. These assets, according to authorities, were then purportedly sold abroad.
The investigation was initiated back in March after allegations arose that Bolsonaro had neglected to report diamond jewelry with an estimated worth of $3.2 million. This jewelry, including a set consisting of a Chopard diamond necklace, earrings, and a watch, had been confiscated at Sao Paulo’s international airport in 2021. It was gifted by the Saudi government to Bolsonaro and his wife, Michelle. Bolsonaro has consistently denied any allegations of misconduct.
