Carlsbad, California – In early 2023, the Gemological Institute of America will take the first step toward going paperless when it comes to its grading reports.
The laboratory announced on Monday that its most popular report, the GIA Diamond Dossier, will become digital-only starting on 2 January. Printed versions of these reports will no longer be produced, although all existing printed Diamond Dossiers will remain valid.
Instead of a physical grading report, those requesting a Diamond Dossier will receive a QR code that can be scanned to open the report in the new GIA app, available for both iOS and Android devices.
Reports will also be accessible through GIA’s online Report Check portal and the laboratory’s application programming interface (API), which integrates report data into clients’ business materials.
The digital reports include a report access card with the report number, QR code and four Cs information that can be embedded in receipts, invoices and e-commerce sites.
The Diamond Dossier is the first report that GIA is migrating to an all-digital format as part of its previously announced goal to phase out all paper reports by 2025.
The laboratory has not yet announced which report will be the next to go digital-only.
“Moving to digital reports will reduce the environmental impact of our operations, which is part of our strategy to ensure that GIA continues our mission of protecting consumers and promoting their trust for decades to come,” said Susan Jacques, GIA president and CEO.
