They say when in Rome, do as the Romans do. We’re not sure that includes losing over half a million dollars worth of jewellery on the street.
But Post Malone isn’t one to follow convention, intentionally or otherwise. And in a new Esquire cover story, the rapper revealed that he dropped a $600,000 diamond directly into a sewer in the Eternal City. (Spoiler alert: it all turned out fine, thanks to Post’s ingenuity).
The problem started with the rapper chowing down on some Chicken McNuggets, not the most Italian of fare, but hey, we can’t blame him for his cravings. The nugget must have been a little tough, though, because it managed to dislodge a diamond he had set in his tooth. While another diamond stayed in place, the one that fell out eluded Post’s best efforts to hold on to it.
“I had the left one in my hand, and I dropped it right into the sink,” the rapper told Esquire. “I was like, ‘Fuck, man, I’m gonna have to go into the ancient Roman sewers.'”
While Post didn’t have to descend into the bowels of Rome himself, he did come up with a rather creative way to retrieve the gem. Using a pair of pliers and one of those plastic tripods you find in a pizza box, he MacGyvered a device that could scoop the diamond out of the drain. Shortly afterwards, he had a Roman dentist embed the jewel back into his tooth, returning it to its rightful place alongside Post’s other dental diamond. The close call left a lasting impression on the rapper, leading him to title his 2022 album Twelve Carat Toothache in reference to the lost gem.
With $1.2 million worth of diamonds in his mouth alone, it’s clear that Post enjoys some over-the-top accessories. In the past, he’s also worn a Rolex Daytona Rainbow and a Richard Mille watch with a giant skull on it. He’s also owned some extremely rare cars, including a one-off Bugatti Chiron and a one-off McLaren Senna XP.
None of these, however, are as enduring as his diamonds, which we hope are now safer after the Chicken McNugget incident.
