Opal is colourful enough on its own, its flashes of colour so enchanting you’d swear they were made of magic. But I love it when a jeweller plays up its vibrancy with even more colour, making sure we never miss a moment of rainbow splendour.
Take an opal ring from Ruchi’s Aurora Nights collection. The New York jeweller took inspiration from the aurora borealis (which, if you believe in magic, can be found in an opal) to bring the gemstone’s hues to life. The ring’s setting is made from tinted rhodium that makes your eyes pop – sure, we’ve seen coloured rhodium before, but this combination could stop traffic.
“Enchanted by the vibrant colours dancing across the night sky of the Aurora Borealis, Ruchi brings vibrant hues to life in her Aurora Nights collection,” reads a statement from the brand to JCK. “For the first time, the designer has used tinted rhodium in varying shades of iridescent purple, pink and blue over 18-karat gold and set with exceptional cut diamonds and opals. Sleek and swirling, the stackable rings are hand-dipped in vibrant metal that evokes the magic of the Northern Lights.
Featuring not one, but two opals, the ring is set in an open setting – a little space between the stones breaks up the richness of colour. The band, which transitions from pink to purple to blue, has a surprising softness to it, perhaps in contrast to the shock of colour from the stones.
This ring looks great on the hand and is a fun alternative to October’s glut of opal jewellery.
