Rabat – Regional police forces at the Guerguerat border crossing in southern Morocco have arrested five people aged between 21 and 52 for smuggling gold and illegal drugs used for cosmetic and sexual purposes.
The arrests were made in two separate operations, the first of which saw four Moroccan nationals arrested in a car coming from Mauritania. Subsequent checks revealed that they were in possession of 70 kilos of maassel, a harmful tobacco mixture.
The authorities also found significant quantities of dangerous cosmetics and sexual drugs.
In the second operation, police arrested another Moroccan national in possession of eight unauthorised gold bars weighing over 10 kilograms.
The arrested individuals are now undergoing judicial investigation to determine further details of the international smuggling operations and any possible accomplices.
Earlier this week, the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) foiled an attempt to smuggle over a tonne of the drug Chira at the port of Tangier Med.
The drugs were found on board an international lorry driven by a person of Moroccan origin.
