The largest fancy vivid yellow diamond ever sold at auction recently passed through Sotheby’s New York. The top lot in December’s Magnificent Jewels sale, the 133.03 carat diamond fetched more than C$7.4 million (US$5.5 million).
The unmounted cushion modified VS2 clarity diamond was purchased by diamond manufacturer Diacore. The company currently has a partnership with Sotheby’s called “Sotheby’s Diamonds”. Under the terms of the agreement, Diacore manufactures and markets diamonds exclusively for private sale at Sotheby’s locations in London, New York and Hong Kong.
In total, 74.5 per cent of the 137 lots in the Magnificent Jewels auction were sold, generating more than C$52.1 million (US$38.4 million). Among the items sold were two coloured diamond rings – a solitaire ring with a 7.37 carat fancy intense orange-pink diamond and a toi et moi ring with a 3.68 carat fancy grey-violet diamond.
