166-carat diamond discovered in Botswana

Lucara Diamond, a diamond exploration and mining firm, announced on Wednesday the discovery of a 166-carat Type IIa gem from Botswana’s Karowe Mine.

GABORONE, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) — Lucara Diamond, a diamond exploration and mining firm, announced on Wednesday the discovery of a 166-carat Type IIa gem from Botswana’s Karowe Mine.

According to the Canadian-headquartered company, it is its first large discovery in 2024. The diamond is the 328th stone over 100 carats since the company started mining in 2012.

William Lamb, Lucara chief executive officer, said the latest recovery supports the economic rationale for investing in an underground expansion project that will extend the mine life to at least 2040.

Lucara Diamond is the 100-percent owner of Karowe Diamond Mine, in north-central Botswana, about 512 km from Gaborone, the capital of Botswana.
