The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) marked a milestone with the unveiling of its latest diamond grading laboratory, GIA Laboratory DMCC (Dubai Multi Commodities Centre), on February 19, 2024, in Dubai.
Tom Moses, GIA’s Executive Vice President and Chief Laboratory and Research Officer, expressed the significance of this endeavor, stating, “Opening a GIA laboratory in the crucial global diamond hub of Dubai is a pivotal stride in broadening our services to advance our vital mission of consumer protection and cater to the demands of the industry.”
Ahmed bin Sulayem, the Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of DMCC, underscored the importance of this collaboration, stating, “As a frontrunner in research, education, and grading, we are thrilled to welcome GIA as an integral component of the new silk route in the global diamond supply chain, further accentuating Dubai’s strategic significance within it. The establishment of the GIA DMCC Laboratory at Uptown Tower not only enhances the value proposition for our free zone members but also for the broader industry, particularly in streamlining cycle times.”
Initially, the services at the new GIA facility will be exclusively available to clients operating within the Dubai free trade zones, with plans to extend intake from other locations in Dubai and eventually from other countries. The scope of services offered in Dubai will cover D-to-Z diamonds weighing up to 3.99 carats.
