Star Diamond Corporation remains steadfast in its commitment to the Star–Orion South Diamond Project near Prince Albert, expressing optimism amid recent developments linking the province’s endeavors to the Middle East.
Situated approximately 60 km east of Prince Albert, the Star–Orion South Diamond Project is spearheaded by Star Diamond Corporation.
Originally established as a joint venture with Rio Tinto, the project saw a significant transition in November 2023, with both parties entering into an agreement, resulting in Star Diamond Corporation now holding 100% interest in the Fort à la Corne Kimberlites.
In an exclusive interview with paNOW, President Ewan Mason emphasized the company’s determination to see the mine through fruition, albeit acknowledging the process won’t unfold overnight.
Mason stated, “It’s just a question of who does it and how it gets financed, and of course, we’ve gone on record as saying we’re not interested in partnering with another mining company.” He further disclosed plans to seek support from governments, financial investors, and Indigenous communities to facilitate the construction of the mine, with discussions slated for later this month.
Highlighting ongoing developments, Mason revealed an upcoming resource update scheduled for June, alongside the commencement of the pre-feasibility study, anticipated to conclude within a year. Subsequently, a feasibility study is projected to be finalized within two years, paving the way for financing and eventual construction of the mine.
These remarks from the company president follow the provincial government’s proactive efforts in promoting the Star Diamond Corporation to potential investors in the United Arab Emirates. Notably, in January 2022, the Government of Saskatchewan established a trade office in the United Arab Emirates as part of its broader strategy to foster trade relations across various international hubs.
Addressing the support received from the Saskatchewan government, Mason expressed gratitude, stating, “We were trying to figure out a way to make some inroads into the Middle East because we’re looking for big investors, and these guys [government] popped out of nowhere and put this all together and away they went.” Since this promotional initiative, Mason noted an influx of inquiries via LinkedIn from individuals in the Emirates.
Overall, Mason remains buoyed by the support garnered, firmly believing that the mine will emerge as a significant economic success story for Saskatchewan.
