Glendora, CA— The owners of Desire Jewelry faced a devastating “nightmare” after burglars drilled through the store’s roof and stole approximately $800,000 in jewelry, cash, and other items. The burglary occurred shortly before midnight on May 15, while Monir and Jennifer Kassis were out of town celebrating Mother’s Day and their 23rd wedding anniversary.
Located at 230 North Glendora Avenue, Desire Jewelry was targeted by thieves who bypassed the alarm system and cut a hole in the ceiling to access two safes in the back room. Monir Kassis, 44, discovered the theft when he returned to open the store a few days later.
“It’s unbelievable,” Monir Kassis said. “It’s a nightmare, but we’re trying to hold on strong.”
The stolen items included a gun and customers’ jewelry, among them deeply sentimental pieces like Jennifer Kassis’ engagement ring, wedding ring, and a small cross belonging to one of their children. The total loss is still being calculated, but the initial estimate stands at $800,000.
“It’s more of an emotional loss for me. Twenty-four years of all the gifts Monir gave me,” Jennifer Kassis, 43, said, holding back tears.
Security footage from neighboring businesses revealed at least four burglars in the area, including two who jumped over a fence. A detective from the Glendora Police Department could not be reached for comment.
In the aftermath, the Kassis family received an outpouring of support from customers and fellow jewelers. A fundraiser has been set up on GoFundMe to help the couple recover from their financial loss.
