Two Men Convicted in 2022 Murder of Detroit Jeweler

Pontiac, Mich.—A jury in Oakland County, Michigan, has found two men guilty in the June 2022 murder of 47-year-old Daniel “Hutch” Hutchinson, owner of Hutch’s Jewelry, a well-known independent jeweler in the Detroit area.

Marco Bisbikis, Hutchinson’s attorney, and Roy Larry were convicted of first-degree premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree premeditated murder, assault with intent to murder, and related firearm charges, according to the Oakland County prosecutor’s office.

The verdict was delivered after an eight-day trial and an hour-and-a-half of jury deliberation.

“The evidence revealed an elaborate and shocking sequence of events that ultimately led to the murder of Dan Hutchinson and the attempted murder of Marisa Hutchinson,” said Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald. “This was a horrible and tragic crime and I hope today’s verdict brings some peace to the family and loved ones of Dan Hutchinson.”

Daniel Hutchinson, known for his custom jewelry, including diamond-encrusted pendants, chains, and Cartier sunglasses known as “Buffs,” was shot to death on June 1, 2022, while sitting in his GMC Yukon Denali. His wife, Marisa, was also in the vehicle and was injured by bullet fragments.

Evidence presented at the trial indicated that Bisbikis orchestrated the murder by inserting himself into the couple’s will and hiring Larry to carry out the killing. Marisa Hutchinson, testifying under immunity, revealed that Bisbikis managed the couple’s unreported cash earnings, set up a trust, paid their expenses, and persuaded them to invest $2 million in a film project in which he claimed to star. Bisbikis secretly named himself as the third beneficiary in their will, ensuring he would inherit everything if they both died.

Earlier, two other defendants, Darnell Larry and Angelo Raptoplous, pleaded guilty to solicitation of murder, with Darnell testifying in the trial. Another suspect, Phillip Sumpter of Ohio, was charged with conspiracy to murder last year.

Bisbikis and Roy Larry are being held in Oakland County Jail and face sentencing on June 12. They could receive life in prison without parole for the murder and conspiracy charges. The assault charge carries a potential life sentence, and the firearm charge mandates a two-year sentence.
