Richemont has announced a major leadership change at Cartier, the iconic jewellery house renowned for its luxury pieces worn by celebrities and royalty. Effective September 1, Louis Ferla, currently CEO of Swiss watchmaker Vacheron Constantin, will succeed Cyrille Vigneron as the new CEO of Cartier.
Vigneron, aged 63, is retiring after a notable eight-year tenure at Cartier, a brand famously adorned by figures such as Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, Nicole Kidman, Princess Diana, and Kate, the Princess of Wales.
Analysts view this transition as a strategic move in Richemont’s broader generational shift, particularly following the recent appointment of Nicolas Bos as the group’s new CEO in May. Cartier, known for its iconic Tank watches, Trinity rings, and Panther jewellery, is a cornerstone of Richemont’s portfolio, contributing over half of the group’s operating profit, which totaled 4.8 billion euros ($5.14 billion) last year.
Ferla, who has led Vacheron Constantin since 2017, is well-acquainted with Cartier, having spent a decade with the brand earlier in his career, including a leadership role in its China division.
Richemont CEO Nicolas Bos expressed confidence in Ferla’s ability to lead Cartier, praising his strategic insight and management skills. “Louis’s strategic vision and inspiring leadership have greatly contributed to Vacheron Constantin’s prominence as a top luxury watchmaker,” Bos said.
Jon Cox, an analyst at Kepler Cheuvreux, acknowledged the challenge Ferla faces but emphasized his familiarity with Cartier’s operations. He contrasted this with the more volatile fashion sector, where leadership changes can often be more disruptive.
Luca Solca of Bernstein also endorsed Ferla’s suitability for the role, citing Vacheron Constantin’s recent success under his leadership. “Louis Ferla has been instrumental in the success of Vacheron Constantin, and his experience will be valuable at Cartier,” Solca noted.
Ferla’s appointment signals a significant step in Richemont’s strategic evolution, positioning Cartier for continued prominence in the luxury jewellery market.
