Bulgari has orchestrated a masterpiece of horological innovation with the introduction of its new Octo Chiming Watches. These exceptional timepieces, a testament to the brand’s craftsmanship, include a duo, trio, and quartet of chiming watches. They explore a rich harmonic range, from two-tone minute repeaters to the four-gong melodies of the grande sonnerie. Collaborating with renowned Italian-Swiss conductor Lorenzo Viotti, Bulgari has crafted a unique sound experience that merges the art of watchmaking with the world of music.
The Octo Roma Grande Sonnerie Tourbillon and Octo Roma Carillon Tourbillon are at the forefront of Bulgari’s sound innovation. These watches introduce the tritone harmonic interval, an unexpected and historically dissonant musical interval, creating a bold new auditory experience in horology. Bulgari, deeply rooted in Roman cultural heritage and classical music traditions, has broken away from the usual boundaries of musical harmony, bringing forth timepieces that resonate with modern and classical influences alike.
Housed in the iconic Octo Roma case, these watches are a true showcase of Bulgari’s expertise in grand complications. The brand also reintroduces the groundbreaking Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater, crafted in carbon, which holds the title of the world’s thinnest chiming watch. Together, these pieces form a collection of horological instruments designed for both the eye and ear.
Bulgari has long been a leader in horological acoustics, and its technical prowess shines through once again. It remains one of the few manufacturers to produce all three types of chiming wristwatches, drawing upon the skills of its master watchmakers. With the Octo Roma Grande Sonnerie Tourbillon, the watch’s BVL 800 calibre chimes the hours, quarters, and minutes with remarkable precision. The four-gong mechanism provides an enchanting soundscape, automatically chiming the hours and quarters, and capable of repeating the hours on demand.
The Octo Roma Carillon Tourbillon, equipped with the BVL428 calibre, strikes three notes as it chimes the hours, quarters, and minutes, adding depth and complexity to its sound profile. Bulgari’s innovation in acoustic timepieces dates back to 2016 when it introduced the thinnest minute repeater, revolutionizing the field. As 2024 draws to a close, Bulgari will reissue these three striking mechanisms, reaffirming its position as a leader in the fusion of music and horology.
Lorenzo Viotti, who collaborated with Bulgari on this project, explained the significance of the tritone interval used in these watches. “The tritone creates tension and dissonance, which stands in stark contrast to the consonant harmonies typically preferred today. In medieval times, this interval was seen as unsettling and was even symbolically linked to spiritual concepts, earning the nickname ‘the devil’s interval.’”
Bulgari’s new Octo Chiming Watches not only showcase the brand’s technical brilliance but also redefine the auditory experience of time. With every chime, these timepieces offer a symphony on the wrist, blending centuries-old traditions with cutting-edge innovation.
