During the first presidential debate in Philadelphia on September 10, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump debated key issues, such as immigration, the economy, and abortion. However, while the candidates’ remarks drew widespread attention, some on social media were distracted by a different topic: Harris’s earrings.
After the debate, rumors circulated online suggesting that Harris had been wearing “audio” or “earphone” earrings, implying she was being coached in violation of debate rules. Conservative commentator Laura Loomer added to the speculation, posting on X, “Interesting choice of earrings tonight, @KamalaHarris…,” alongside images of Nova H1 audio earrings.
Nova H1 audio earrings are marketed as wireless earphones embedded in pearl earrings, complete with gold- or silver-plated clips. Several VERIFY readers reached out, asking whether these claims about Harris’s accessories held any truth.
Despite the visual similarity between Harris’s earrings and Nova H1’s design, the earrings Harris wore during the debate were not audio devices. Instead, they were South Sea pearl earrings from Tiffany & Co., part of the brand’s HardWear Collection. A blogger from “What Kamala Wore” had previously noted that Harris had worn these same earrings on various other occasions.
In contrast, the Nova H1 earrings are designed with wireless earphones inside and feature a bulkier, clip-on design. Images from the Kickstarter campaign and Icebach Sound Solutions’ website reveal the Nova H1 earrings have a more robust clip compared to the sleek, J-shaped design of Harris’s Tiffany earrings. These earrings encircle the earlobe with a prong design and have a post for pierced ears rather than a clip.
Photos from the Associated Press further confirm that Harris’s earrings were Tiffany & Co., not Nova H1 audio earrings. The South Sea pearls on her earrings appeared larger than those in Tiffany’s current collection, but the unique design matched Tiffany’s HardWear series. Though the specific earrings Harris wore are no longer available, a similar pair in sterling silver is priced at $800.
In response to inquiries, Malte Iversen of Icebach Sound Solutions humorously commented on the matter, stating, “We do not know whether Mrs. Harris wore one of our products. The resemblance is striking, and while our product was not specifically developed for use at presidential debates, it is nonetheless suited for it.”
Iversen added that the company is working on a male version of the Nova H1 earrings, jesting about the difficulty in finding suitable colors for a potential offering to the Trump campaign, remarking, “orange does not go well with a lot of colours.”
ABC News, which hosted the debate, had clearly outlined rules prohibiting props and candidate coaching during the event. Harris’s earrings, therefore, were simply an accessory choice, not a covert communication tool.
