Louis Vuitton’s iconic monogram might be its most recognized print, but for connoisseurs, the Damier pattern stands as an equally desirable motif. Considered the more understated counterpart to the colorful monogram, the Damier (French for “checkerboard”) boasts a rich history, dating back to its creation by Georges Vuitton as a canvas print in 1888. Recently, it served as the foundation for Pharrell Williams’ debut collection as Louis Vuitton’s men’s creative director, where he adorned everything from suits to parkas in a pixelated, camo-colored version of the motif. Williams later incorporated the Damier into custom designs for Beyoncé and as retail wrapping for the brand’s Champs Elysées store during his collection’s launch.
In a fitting evolution, the Damier pattern has now transitioned into Louis Vuitton’s fine jewelry line. Named Le Damier de Louis Vuitton, the collection features 12 unisex pieces crafted from diamonds, yellow gold, and white gold.
To preserve the Damier’s minimalist elegance, Francesca Amfitheatrof, Louis Vuitton’s artistic director for watches and jewelry, designed squares etched in gold, each encasing a round brilliant diamond set in a square, enhancing the collection’s linear aesthetic. “This diamond collection transcends mere stones, focusing on the patterns they create,” Amfitheatrof noted in the release.
The collection predominantly features rings available in various widths, encouraging stacking to amplify the graphic impact of the Damier print. Additionally, huggie-style hoop earrings and tennis bracelets—designed with square lines reminiscent of a tennis court—complete the range. Emphasizing the collection’s athletic heritage, Amfitheatrof crafted the bracelets with flexible articulation, ensuring they are “always in motion and always on your wrist.”
The full Le Damier collection will be accessible starting October 18 through Louis Vuitton stores and online.
