Watches, often seen as status symbols or precision instruments, can also be a lot of fun—especially when they take a creative turn.
That’s exactly the case with the upcoming TimeForArt charity auction. This event merges horology with a noble cause: raising funds to support emerging artists. The concept is simple—luxury watch brands are invited to donate unique, one-off timepieces that will be auctioned at Phillips in early December, with proceeds benefiting the arts.
Anoma A1 TimeForArt 2024,Estimated at $1,000-$2,000, this piece from Anoma, one of 2024’s most celebrated new brands, stands out with a design inspired by mid-century art. The watch draws its shape from the contours of a freeform 1950s coffee table, while its dial pays homage to the abstract works of renowned painters Bridget Riley and Ferruccio Gard. With its bold, artistic approach, Anoma delivers a timepiece that embodies the essence of both art and horology.
The inaugural TimeForArt auction took place in 2022, featuring standout pieces such as a skull-themed watch from Chopard, an hourglass by De Bethune and HG Timepiece, and an Arnold & Son creation showcasing a spider-web motif—a design choice inspired by the spider’s symbolic connection to timekeeping in folklore.
Each brand seems to have embraced the spirit of the event, creating watches where art is a central component of their design. From avant-garde aesthetics to classic craftsmanship, the lineup highlights the artistic side of watchmaking in a way that is refreshingly original.
