Transforming The Industry: De Beers Announces Business

De Beers Group is excited to announce the opening of applications for its flagship business development program designed to empower local entrepreneurs in the diamond and jewelry sector. This initiative, launched in 2016 in partnership with Raizcorp, goes beyond traditional training; it embodies a transformative vision that aligns with South Africa’s strategic goals for the industry.

Richard Steenkamp, Senior Sales and Office Manager at De Beers Sightholder Sales South Africa, emphasized the company’s commitment: “As South Africa’s oldest mining company, De Beers is dedicated to leading the transformation of the local diamond industry towards greater inclusivity and sustainability.” This commitment stems from the belief that fostering entrepreneurship is essential for driving economic growth and creating jobs in the region.

The program, a cornerstone of De Beers’ Beneficiation Strategy, focuses on equipping ambitious entrepreneurs with crucial business skills over a three-year period. Participants will benefit from comprehensive training and personalized mentorship from experienced business leaders, tailored specifically for diamond beneficiators, jewelry designers, manufacturers, and retailers.

“Our primary goal is to nurture entrepreneurs who could potentially become successful De Beers Sightholders,” Steenkamp added. This exclusive designation is granted to a select group of leading diamantaires, enabling them to purchase De Beers’ rough diamonds through its global sales and auctions.

The success of the program is evidenced by the recent appointment of De Beers’ first black-owned Sightholder, a proud graduate of the inaugural 2016 cohort. This achievement highlights the program’s potential to transform individual lives and reshape the industry landscape.

Entrepreneurs meeting specific eligibility criteria are encouraged to apply, with preference given to those whose businesses have been operational for over 18 months. The closing date for applications is October 31, 2024. Prospective applicants must also secure licensing from the South African Diamond and Precious Metals Regulator (SADPMR) to qualify.

“This program represents a significant investment in the future of the sector and the broader South African economy,” Steenkamp concluded. By supporting the growth and success of local entrepreneurs, De Beers reaffirms its legacy of commitment to the industry, demonstrating that innovation and transformation can lead to a more inclusive future.
