In a dazzling display of royal elegance, Queen Mary of Denmark turned to the royal family’s stunning collection of heirloom diamonds for her appearances at two of the royal couple’s New Year receptions in Copenhagen last week. The receptions, held at the iconic Christiansborg Palace, saw Queen Mary grace the events in impeccable style, adorned in precious jewels passed down through generations.
While the first New Year reception of the year is typically a tiara event, Queen Mary’s look at the diplomatic reception was equally striking. She chose a sophisticated metallic brocade dress by Rickie Freeman for Teri Jon, a piece she had worn during a recent visit to Greenland. For this winter soirée, she layered the dress with a white turtleneck blouse and completed the ensemble with elegant long white gloves.
However, it was the royal jewelry that truly captured attention. Queen Mary selected a pair of exquisite eighteenth-century diamond earrings for the occasion. The earrings, originally belonging to Princess Anne of Orange, feature round diamond studs with pear-shaped diamond drops. This pair of earrings has a storied history: Princess Anne, the eldest daughter of King George I of Great Britain, passed them down through generations, and they were brought to Denmark by Queen Lovisa, more than a century after Anne’s passing. This was Queen Mary’s second time wearing the earrings, following their debut at the Icelandic state banquet in October.
Alongside the earrings, Queen Mary wore a magnificent diamond-set bracelet, also part of the royal collection. Originally a gift from King Carl XV of Sweden to Princess Louise of the Netherlands in 1850, this bracelet features an elaborate diamond clasp that can be detached and worn as a brooch. The bracelet, like the earrings, was passed down through the generations and arrived in Denmark with Queen Lovisa.
These heirloom pieces are not just symbols of the Danish royal family’s long history, but also reminders of the royal couple’s deep connection to their heritage and the enduring elegance of royal jewelry.
