In an exclusive interview with Prestige, Coldplay’s bassist Guy Berryman and renowned jeweller Hannah Martin discuss their unexpected meeting and the creation of their punk-inspired jewelry collection, A Vanitas.
Reflecting on life’s transience, the collection combines 18-karat yellow gold with blue sapphires and made its debut at Sotheby’s Hong Kong.
The collaboration began unexpectedly in 2021 at Heathrow Airport, where Berryman inquired about Martin’s distinctive gold and sapphire hoop earring.
Inspired by the theme of life’s impermanence from Dutch vanitas paintings, A Vanitas explores punk motifs like razor blades, dog tags, and skulls, all reimagined in luxurious materials.
The collection features 18-karat yellow gold and blue sapphires, merging raw rebellion with refined craftsmanship. Martin says, “We wanted to approach classic punk elements in a fresh way.”
Music played a pivotal role in shaping the designs. Berryman immersed himself in jazz, while Martin explored industrial sounds like Nine Inch Nails. Their shared love for music, particularly their early discussions about Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood, helped shape the narrative of the collection.
The new collection debuted at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, where it was displayed in the museum-like atmosphere of Sotheby’s Maison. Martin describes the collection as a blend of heritage and avant-garde, merging classical influences with modern interpretations of punk.
Gold plays an integral role in Martin’s designs. “Gold is part of my soul,” she says. “It’s rebellious to take elements like a razor blade and turn them into something luxurious.”
The collection includes pieces such as a razor-blade wristband, layered necklaces, and delicate dog tag earrings, all highlighting the signature Sotheby’s blue.
The duo hints at more collaborations in the future. “Guy and I are always bouncing ideas,” Martin teases. As their partnership continues to evolve, their work is sure to captivate those who appreciate jewelry that challenges conventions while reflecting the spirit of our times.
